Computer Project #1 -- The CSE Solaris Environment

Assignment Overview:

This assignment will help you become familiar with the computing environment
that will be used for this course. You will complete the exercises below
and submit your work for grading via the handin system.

It is worth 10 points (1% of course grade), and must be completed no later
than 11:59 PM on Thursday, September 10.

Assignment Specifications:

1) This assignment will be completed using the CSE Solaris environment (the
the server "north.cse.msu.edu").

2) Open a web browser and review the following tutorial:

http://www.cse.msu.edu/~cse320/Tutorial/

The tutorial contains seven short lessons about UNIX and UNIX-like systems.

3) Complete the tutorial about the "vim" editor using the steps below.

a) Log onto "north" using your CSE account.

b) Copy the file named "/user/cse320/Projects/project01.tutorial" into your
account as the file named "proj01.tutorial":

cp /user/cse320/Projects/project01.tutorial proj01.tutorial

c) Execute the "vim" editor and follow the directions in the tutorial:

vim proj01.tutorial

d) When you have completed the tutorial, use the CSE handin system to
submit your edited file for grading.

Assignment Deliverables:

The deliverable for this assignment is the following:

proj01.tutorial -- your edited version of the tutorial file

Be sure to use the specified file name, and to submit your file for grading
via the handin system.

Assignment Notes:

1) You will use the CSE server "north" for all of your work in this course.

2) The CSE handin system can be accessed using a web browser and using a
command in the terminal window. It would be best if you were comfortable
with both methods.
